Albert Schweitzer (January 14, 1875 – September 4, 1965), German/French theologian and Nobel Peace Prize winner, collection of vintage ephemera, including two silver print photographs and an annotated and autographed original printed map of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital. An organist, philosopher, physician and philanthropist, Schweitzer is perhaps best known for his work in Gabon, Africa in 1912, where he committed to serving as a medical doctor in the Paris Missionary Society's mission at Lambaréné on the Ogooué river. There, he and his wife established the Albert Schweitzer Hospital. In 1952, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "Reverence for Life," which was Schweitzer's take on universal ethics Boasting an impressive list of publications, musical compositions and humanitarian efforts, Schweitzer was referred to as "the greatest man in the world" in a 1947 issue of Life magazine.
Collection includes two vintage photographs, one bearing Schweitzer's writing in French, including the date 1952. The second is signed on verso, "Albert Schweitzer / Goethe haus / Frankfurt," with additional notations in French. Also included is a printed plan entitled, "Plan de l'Hopital du Dr. Albert Schweitzer a Lambarene," bearing a lengthy, untranslated annotation in Schweitzer's hand, including his signature and mention of Glenn Daniel Kittler, author of "The Maryknoll Fathers: The Heroic Story of Fifty Years in Mission Fields Afar.” Annotation is dated 1955.
With photographs ​measuring approximately, 5 x 4.75 and 3.75 x 5.75, and the map measuring approximately 9.5 x 11.75, this collection is in overall fine condition, with the expected age wear to the map, including toning and some tearing along the edges.
