Carl Van Vechten, (June 17, 1880 – December 21, 1964), celebrated American writer and photographer, original, silver-print photograph, 3.5 x 5.5, featuring artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Dated May 3, 1932.
Van Vechten, the celebrated American writer and photographer, was the literary executor of Gertrude Stein and a key figure of the Harlem Renaissance movement. He captured iconic images of all the key members in the worlds of Art, Theater, Music, and Literature. Van Vechten viewed his photography as a hobby; he never took commissions, he never sold photographs. He would grant permission to publish them, but had strict requirements to do so. He was a prominent fixture in 20th century photography collections with his work being included in such institutions as The Library of Congress, The Museum of The City of New York and The Smithsonian Institution.
Georgia O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986), American artist. Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O'Keeffe first came to the attention of the New York art community in 1916. She made large-format paintings of enlarged blossoms, presenting them close up as if seen through a magnifying lens, and New York buildings, most of which date from the same decade. Beginning in 1929, when she began working part of the year in Northern New Mexico — which she made her permanent home in 1949 — O’Keeffe depicted subjects specific to that area. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the 'Mother of American Modernism.'
Verso bears original hand written date and notations. In fine condition.
