Sixth-Plate Daguerreotype (1840 - 1855), 19th century portrait, ornate vintage gold frame, 2.75 x 3.25. The daguerreotype photograph, developed in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, was the very process that would make history as the first publicly announced and commercially recognized photographic process. This type of image can be identified by its mirror-like surface of metallic silver which, when tilted, may virtually disappear.

Featured within this vintage Union Case is a half-length 19th century portrait of a seated couple, each clad in traditional period dress; the woman dons a bonnet and shawl, while the man, clad in a full suit and tie, holds a book in his lap. The image is bordered by a gold frame, and the interior of the front cover is lined in red satin. The exterior of the case is embellished in a floral design, and the original closure clasp remains intact and functioning.

In fine condition, with some silvering and spotting around the edge of the image.
