Sixth-Plate Daguerreotype (1840 - 1855), 19th century family portrait, vintage ornate Union Case, 2.75 x 3.25. The daguerreotype photograph, developed in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, was the very process that would make history as the first publicly announced and commercially recognized photographic process. This type of image can be identified by its mirror-like surface of metallic silver which, when tilted, may virtually disappear.
Featured here is a 19th century portrait of a woman and young girl in period dresses, both of which feature gold-tinted accents, framed by an oval gold frame. Housed in a gorgeously elaborate Union Case boasting a coat of arms design, the front interior cover of the case features brown velvet lining. Case remains perfectly attached at the original metal hinges.
In fine condition, with a small crack in the back panel and some silvering towards the bottom of the image.
