Ninth-Plate Daguerreotype (1840 - 1855), 19th century portrait, vintage case, 2 x 2.5. The daguerreotype photograph, developed in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, was the very process that would make history as the first publicly announced and commercially recognized photographic process. This type of image can be identified by its mirror-like surface of metallic silver which, when tilted, may virtually disappear.

Pictured in one half of this vintage case is a 19th century bust-length portrait of a distinguished gentleman, clad in a suit and tie, staring unflinchingly at the camera. The image is bordered by a gold frame, and the interior of the front cover is lined in gold velvet, featuring an emblazoned design bearing the identifying words, "120 W. Market St. / Willard / 8 Doors E. Sch - 6th St." The case remains attached at the hinge and bears the original, still-functioning closure clasp.

Some silvering and surface marks to the image, and light wear to the case, otherwise fine condition.
