Ninth-Plate Daguerreotype (1840 - 1855), 19th century portrait, vintage case, 2 x 2.5. The daguerreotype photograph, developed in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, was the very process that would make history as the first publicly announced and commercially recognized photographic process. This type of image can be identified by its mirror-like surface of metallic silver which, when tilted, may virtually disappear.
Featured here is a 19th century bust-length portrait of a distinguished gentleman clad in a suit and tie, bordered by an oval gold frame. This frame is further bordered by a gold block, much like gold-trimmed pages in a book. Housed in an embellished vintage case, the interior of the front cover features red velvet lining with vine-like designs. The exterior of the front cover boasts a floral design with mother of pearl inlay, and the original, ornate closure claps still remains intact and functioning.
In fine condition, with some silvering around the image and light wear to the case.
