Ninth-Plate Daguerreotype (1840 - 1855), 19th century portrait, vintage case, 2 x 2.5. The daguerreotype photograph, developed in 1839 by Louis Daguerre, was the very process that would make history as the first publicly announced and commercially recognized photographic process. This type of image can be identified by its mirror-like surface of metallic silver which, when tilted, may virtually disappear.
Featured here is a 19th century portrait of a young woman wrapped in a shawl, bordered by an oval gold frame. Housed in an embellished case, the front interior cover features red velvet lining with vine-like designs. Case is detached at the hinges and bears original closure latch.
In very good condition, with moderate wear to the case, including a separation of the covers, scattered spotting to the gold frame and a darkened circle around the image.
