Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961), prolific American author and journalist, original, vintage black and white photograph, 8 x 10 inches.

Taken 1950/1951 in the bar at La Florida (“La Floridita”), in Havana, Cuba, picturing Ernest Hemingway and Adriana Ivancich seated at the table at the left. Her brother, Giancarlo Ivancich, is standing next to her. Mary Hemingway, in the center right, appears to be staring at Giancarlo. Hemingway first met Adriana while visiting Venice in 1949. She visited him in Havana in 1950 and 1951 and became his muse on whom he modeled Renata in "Across the River and Into the Trees" (1950). Next to Mrs. Hemingway, holding a champagne coupe stem glass, is Roberto Herrera.

This photograph is from the personal property of Roberto Herrera Sotolongo, the personal secretary and friend of Ernest Hemingway. Herrera and Hemingway met in 1942, when Herrera became a crew member aboard Hemingway’s boat the “Pilar," at the height of World War II, when Hemingway patrolled the Gulf Stream for German submarines for the US Government.

In 1961, after Hemingway's jarring suicide, Herrara was appointed head of the author's affairs in Cuba, carrying out instructions to deed the property and contents of Finca La Vigia to the people of Cuba "as a place of opportunity for wider education and research, to be maintained in his memory."
