William Joseph Long

William Joseph Long (1866–1952), American writer, naturalist and minister, authentic, autographed vintage handwritten quotation (AQS), 7.75 x 5. Long was minister of the First Congregationalist Church in Stamford, Connecticut, but would travel to Maine every March to be closer to nature. He published many works inspired by his wilderness retreats, including, "Ways of Wood Folk," "Wilderness Ways," "Wood-folk Comedies," "Northern Trails" and "Wood Folk at School." 

Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Long added his signature to a page with the printed date of December 9, "William J. Long," next to a beautifully detailed sketch of a fox walking through snow. This drawing was done by Charles Copeland, who illustrated many of Long's earlier works. Copeland penned his last name next to the sketch.

In fine condition, with overall light toning and a rough left edge from extraction.
