Walt Whitman (May 31, 1819 - March 26, 1892), prominent 19th century American poet, essayist and journalist, authentic vintage photograph. Whitman is among the most influential poets in American history, often called the father of free verse. Whitman's work was very controversial in its time, particularly "Leaves of Grass", which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.
Measuring approximately 4 x 5.75, this wonderful bust-length capture of Whitman is affixed to a 7 x 11.25 cardstock mount, bearing notes in pencil on verso: "From WW Photo / Rockwood NY / Putnam WW Edn 1902 / Poems of WW 1884 / Canturbury Poets."
Photograph is in fine condition, with silvering to the darker areas of the image.
