Thaddeus S.C. Lowe (August 20, 1832 - January 16, 1913), notable 19th century American aeronautics pioneer and later Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Balloon Corps in the Civil War, authentic, autographed vintage, handwritten letter (ALS), dated October 29, 1868. Lowe is considered the father of military aerial reconnaissance in the U.S. and was personally appointed to the position of Chief Union Aeronaut by President Abraham Lincoln.
Lowe writes to business partner James T. Ames regarding money Ames had loaned Lowe. He writes, in part: "I am now working early and late to accomplish what you require before the first of Dec and shall without doubt be in position to pay every dollar before that time, and to make it doubly sure that nothing will occur to cause a moments delay in completing the work I have undertaken here..."
The letter is written three panels of a single folded sheet of paper and signed at the conclusion by Lowe in fountain pen. The signed letter is in fine condition.
