Martin-Michel-Charles Gaudin, 1st Duke of Gaete (19 January 1756 - 5 November 1841), French statesman and Minister of Finances under Napolean Bonaparte, authentic, autographed annotated letter (ALS). The letter is approximately 7" x 8" in size and dated circa 1814. The letter is addressed to his wife.
Gaudin was born in Saint-Denis and held the office of Minister of Finances under Napolean from 1799 to 1814. He founded the Banque de France and the Cour des comptes (Court of Audit).
Due to much of his success as Minister, he was rewarded in 1809 with the title of the Duke of Gaete, in the French controlled Kingdom of Naples.
This one page, untranslated letter is crisply signed at the conclusion by Gaudin. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. The document contains scattered creases, small tears and expected intersecting folds. Of note is a small, circular tear from the seal, on the last page which does affect some of the wording.
