Katharine Hepburn

Katharine Hepburn (May 12, 1907 - June 29, 2003), classic American film actress, authentic autographed typed letter (TLS), three pages, dated May 16, 1989. Over the course of her illustrious career, Hepburn won a record four Academy Awards for the films "Morning Glory," "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "The Lion in the Winter" and "On Golden Pond."

This piece comes from a vast collection of letters spanning a 12 year correspondence between the elusive actress and an avid admirer, Alice Hicks. Within these pages, Hepburn's typically short and brief responses to fan mail take on a seemingly invested, almost poetic form, suggesting a deeper, more intimate relationship between the two women. In this letter, Hepburn sends thanks for a laundry list of gifts, along with a directed sentiment: "We have just received: 10 cans tomatoes / 1 elbow macaroni / 5 various pastas / 1 lasagne / 2 cans mushrooms / $5.oo (returned) / 1 pair red shoes / 3 books ('Bette, Rita and the Rest of My Life'; Lillian Hellman,' 'The Only Living Witness) / A short note - and - A long letter! I actually read your 22-page letter. I think the time has come for me to tell you that in spite of all the delicious loot...you must not write me such long letters...What I'm trying to say is - don't waste your money and time on me. Occasionally you can write me about your crazy life in East Boston...I can't buy that myself. So save your money, Alice. Remember - I'm a Scot!"

Typed on personal stationary with red printed lettering, the letter measures approximately 5.5 x 8.5 inches in size, and has been signed in black ink, "K."
