Jefferson and Varina Davis

Jefferson and Varina Davis: dual Husband-Wife autographed letter. Jefferson Davis (June 3, 1808 – December 6, 1889) was an American politician who was a U.S. Representative and Senator from Mississippi, the 23rd U.S. Secretary of War, and the President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Varina Davis (May 7, 1826 – October 16, 1906) was the second wife of Jefferson Davis. 

Gilt-edged manuscript letter signed "Jeffr. Davis" as U. S. Senator, Washington, D.C., March 16, 1859." The letter is addressed to John W. French a Chaplain at West Point. Davis writes to French in relation to an appointment to West Point for French's son in-part "... I mentioned to the President [Buchanan] the subject of your son's appointment to West Point, though he did not answer me positively, his reply was such as to discourage the hopes I had entertained in that connection. I however pressed the subject further upon him, and received a general assurance of consideration.. I am now packing my trunk to leave for home by the next train..." The 2nd and 3rd interior pages contain an ALS to French signed "V. Davis". In part: "... Won't you now join your prayers to mine that Jeff may come back safe and not suffer by the exposure... He is pretty well, but labors too much... I only wish we could say something in return cheering to Mrs. French and yourself about Johnny. I will go and see Mr. Buchanan myself about him - maybe I can beg him into appointing him..."

A doube signed piece by the Confederate President and First Lady is a true rarity. Further, this piece has historical importance with a dual reference to President Buchanan! A wonderful piece of American history.

Fine condition with only light signs of exepected age.
