Jacqueline Kennedy

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (July 28, 1929 – May 19, 1994), wife of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, and First Lady of the United States, hand-written letter as First Lady, with Cuban Missile Crisis content.

Autographed letter [“JFK” in her hand] as First Lady, [The White House, Washington, D.C., November 2, 1962] To Mrs. [Evelyn] Lincoln, President Kennedy’s Personal Secretary.

In full, “Mrs. Lincoln – Will you be sure Randolph Churchill is thanked for his telegram to us – by JFK. If you don’t have his address call Lee [Radziwell, Jackie’s sister] – here in W.H. [White House] at 12:30.”

Accompanied by a 5 x 3 inch unlined index card upon which is penned in Gregg shorthand the text of JFK’s reply to Randolph Churchill. “Randy Churchill” is penned in an unknown hand at the conclusion. Also present is an unsigned carbon, ostensibly of the letter sent by President Kennedy to Randolph Churchill (1911-1968), son of the former British Prime Minister: “November 2, 1962 Dear Randolph: Many thanks for your wire and your excellent article. You put the issue clearly and in view of the division of opinion that existed there I understand it was most helpful. Sincerely,”

The Kennedy Library does not have a copy of the article sent by Churchill but does have a carbon copy of a letter from JFK’s Press Secretary, Pierre Salinger, to Randolph Churchill dated October 31, 1962. A copy of the carbon is present.
