Anna Mary Robertson Moses (September 7, 1860 – December 13, 1961), better known by her nickname of "Grandma Moses," renowned American folk artist, framed display featuring two images signed by Moses at age 100.
Having begun painting in earnest at the age of 78, she is often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career in the arts at an advanced age. Her works have been shown and sold in the United States and abroad and have been marketed on greeting cards and other merchandise. Moses' paintings are among the collections of many museums. The Sugaring Off was sold for US$1.2 million in 2006.
Top image: signed “Grand ma Moses.” Color, 6.25 x 6.5 inch affixed to 7.75 x 7.5 inch sheet (visible). Clipped magazine printing – one horizontal and two vertical folds – cut around her image and affixed to a larger sheet which she has signed beneath her image.
Bottom image: signed “Grand ma Moses." Color, 8.5” x 5.75." Clipped magazine printing – two vertical folds – of her painting to illustrate the poem “The Night Before Christmas.” One of her last, Grandma Moses painted it in the spring of 1960 as she approached her 100th birthday on September 7, 1960.
Originally matted and framed together for a finished size of 15.75 x 21.5 inches. The original envelope in which these two signed color photographs were mailed is mounted on the verso of the frame: a 6.5 x 3.5 inch envelope addressed by the collector to herself, 4¢ Lincoln stamp affixed (Moses was born two months before Lincoln was elected President), postmarked Eagle Bridge, New York, October 5, 1960.
