Laurenus Clark Seelye (September 30, 1837 - October 12, 1924), first president of Smith College, authentic, autographed vintage handwritten quotation (AQS), 7.75 x 5. Before being elected president of Smith College in 1873, Seeyle served as a Congregational Minister in Springfield, Massachusetts and became Williston Professor of Rhetoric, Oratory and English Literature at Amherst College.
Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Seelye added the following quote to a page with the printed date of October 18: "Nature often seems more willing to heal us than we are to be healed; and in most _ she will speedily cure us, if we are ready to cooperate with her and will strictly obey her laws. L. Clark Seelye / Smith College / Northampton, Mass."
In fine condition, with overall light toning and a rough left edge from extraction.
