John William Burgess (August 26, 1844 – January 13, 1931), notable American political scientist and author, autographed vintage handwritten quotation (AQS). Regarded as one of "the most influential political scientist of the period," Burgess lead the Law School at Columbia University and developed the Faculty of Political Science, the first major institutionalized program in the United States granting the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Burgess added the following quote to a page with the printed date of May 23: "'To live in the presence of great truths and eternal laws, to be led by permanent ideals - that is what keeps a man patient when the world ignores him, and calm and unspoiled when the world praises him.' John W. Burgess."

Measuring approximately 7.75 x 5, this autographed quotation is in overall fine condition, with light toning, a small professionally-repaired tear, and a rough left edge from extraction.
