Francis Edward Clark

Francis Edward Clark (September 12, 1851 – May 26, 1927), American clergyman and author, authentic, autographed vintage handwritten quotation (AQS), 7.75 x 5. Clark founded the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor in Portland, Maine in 1881; by 1908, the small New England sect developed into a massive interdenominational organization, boasting 70,761 societies and more than 3,500,000 members scattered throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, South Africa, India, Japan and China. As an author, Clark focused on his passion, creating such works as, "The Children and the Church," "Some Christian Endeavor Saints," "World Wide Endeavor" and "A New Way Round an Old World," which told of his journey on the newly opened Trans-Siberian Railroad.

Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Clark added the following quote to a page with the printed date of August 1: "The child playing on the nursery floor is not abashed or made uneasy by its mother's presence, but in every new game & fresh childish joy looks up into her eye for the answering smile it is sure to find. The joy is not complete unless the mother sees and shares it. So the Christian's chief joy & satisfaction is that God sees him & that he can see God in all the trivial round, the common task of life. Francis E. Clark."

Extracted from the pages of a 1902 Autograph Calendar book recovered from Orange Memorial Hospital, New Jersey, Sweetser added the following quote to a page with the printed date of July 25: "In the house of life there are no two windows with exactly the same view. We each look from our own window, and so no two of us see things in quite the same way. Kate Dickinson Sweetser."

In fine condition, with overall light toning a rough left edge from extraction.
