Malcolm X; born Malcolm Little and also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (May 19, 1925 – February 21, 1965), African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist, authentic, autographed airmail envelope.
Signed by “M. Shabazz / Shepherd Hotel / Cairo, UAR” in the upper left, and addressed by him to “Mr. Alex Haley / Box 110 (P,O.) / Rome, New York / USA,” 9.5 x 4.5 inches. Faint machine postmark Cairo, “18.IX.64”
The day he left Cairo for Mecca, Malcolm X addresses an airmail envelope to Alex Haley, signing “M. Shabazz” in the upper left return address – 7 lines handwritten by Malcolm X.
After returning from his Hajj, his pilgrimage to Mecca in May 1964, Malcolm X adopted an additional name, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Hajj is a religious obligation that every orthodox Muslim fulfills.
Haley's first book was 1965's 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X,' a collaboration through numerous lengthy interviews with his subject.
The signed envelope is housed 'floating' in a custom double matte, with a printed photograph of Malcolm X and Alex Haley in deep discussion while Haley mans his typewriter. Complete in an archival, museum quality frame for a finished size of 11 x 14 inches. The envelope itself shows some tears and minor flaws but is in very good condition.
