COLLECTING CAMELOT: Memorabilia from the John F. Kennedy Administration and those Closest to the Charismatic President

"History is a relentless master.
It has no present, only the past rushing into the future.
To try to hold fast is to be swept aside."

- JFK

John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred to simply by his initials JFK, was the 35th President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his tragic and controversial assassination at the hands of Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. The assassination proved to be a pivotal  moment in American history because of its impact on the nation and the ensuing political repercussions. In 2004, a Fox News poll found that 66% of Americans thought there had been some sort of conspiracy to kill President Kennedy, while 74% thought there had been a cover-up.

Major world events during his time as "Leader of the Free World" included The Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Space Race, the American Civil Rights Movement, and the preliminary stages of the Vietnam War.

John F. Kennedy comes in third (behind Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mother Teresa) in Gallup's List of Widely Admired People of the 20th Century and although reports of his philandering and extra-marital affairs have garnered much attention and press over the years (names of prominent woman like Marilyn Monroe, Gunilla von Post, Marlene Dietrich, Mimi Alford and Angie Dickinson often are mentioned), he remains one of the most highly ranked U.S. Presidents in public opinion ratings.

Camelot
Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline were younger and 'cooler' than the presidents and first ladies that preceded them, and both were popular in the ever growing media culture in ways more common to pop singers and movie stars than politicians. The couple, oftentimes more celebrity than political, especially Jackie, influenced fashion trends and posed as models bordering on sex symbols in numerous photo spreads in popular magazines and newspapers of the time. Although Dwight D. Eisenhower, Kennedy's predecessor, had allowed presidential press conferences to be filmed for television, it was JFK to first ask for them to be broadcast in a live format and excelled in the new medium. Mrs. Kennedy brought new art and furniture to the White House, even overseeing its restoration. They invited a range of artists, writers and intellectuals to rounds of White House dinners, raising the profile of the arts in America.

The fresh and modern charisma of the couple and their family led to the naming of his administration as "Camelot." Jackie earns credit for the title and coined the term for the first time in print during a post-assassination interview with Theodore White, as a nod to the late President's reverence for the Broadway musical of that name.
