World War I, vintage silver print glossy 8 x 10 photograph depicting "Medical Care - Red Cross / Mary Gladwin / Lowell Thomas (ctr) credit: Pierce Library, The University of Akron."
Mary Gladwin (1861-1939), 1887 alumna of Buchtel College, the first woman awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal for Nursing, she served as a Red Cross Nurse during the Spanish-American War, the Russo-Japanese War, and World War I when she worked under tense and dangerous circumstances in Serbia and elsewhere.
Printed in the second half of the 20th century as part of the American Heritage Publishing Archive.
Verso bears original filing notations and/or credit stamping. In very good condition.
