Mathew Carey Lea (1823–1897), Philadelphia-born American chemist, original, vintage mounted albumen photograph. Lea devoted himself chiefly to the chemistry of photography, to which he made a number of important contributions. His publications include numerous papers on the chemical action of light and an excellent Manual of Photography, and he is credited with the development of Carey Lea Silver, a photochemical, still in use today.
Lower mount bears facsimile signature. Verso bears identifying notations in an unknown hand.
Measuring approximately 4.75 x 7.75, this photograph is in fine condition.
