Jacob A. Riis (May 3, 1849 - May 26, 1914), notable Danish-American social reformer, 'muckraking' journalist, and social documentary photographer, authentic, autographed handwritten letter (ALS), dated August 18, 1913. Riis used his talents as a photographer and journalist to help the underprivileged in the New York slums. He was also an intimate friend of Theodore Roosevelt.
Penned on personal stationery, Riis writes, in part: "The father of the penny as well as of the Christmas stamp is 'Wimas Holsboll, Postmaster, Charlottenlund, Denmark'...If you go to the Reed Cross, go to the head of it, Miss Mabel Boardman, Washington, D.C. ...," signed "Jacob A. Riis."
Accompanied by original mailing envelope.
Measuring approximately 6 x 9, this letter is in fine condition, with light age wear.
