Katharine Hepburn (May 12, 1907 - June 29, 2003), classic American film actress, authentic, autographed vintage typed letter (TLS), dated April 19, 1990. Includes a facsimile copy of Hicks' original letter. Over the course of her illustrious career, Hepburn won a record four Academy Awards for the films "Morning Glory," "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," "The Lion in the Winter" and "On Golden Pond."
This piece comes from a vast collection of letters spanning a 12 year correspondence between the elusive actress and an avid admirer, Alice Hicks. Within these pages, Hepburn's typically short and brief responses to fan mail take on a seemingly invested, almost poetic form, suggesting a deeper, more intimate relationship between the two women. Although this lengthy correspondence does suggest something more than a platonic relationship, this piece is an example of one of Hepburn's rebuttals to Hicks' affections: "I got your letter with the beautiful ring -- It really is charming...I have at the same time to tell you that I have no jewelry of any kind and never wear it...And I'm sending it back to you so that you can keep it." In closing, Hepburn reiterates her rebuke by penning, "We don't need rings do we?"
Typed on personal stationary with red printed lettering, the letter measures approximately 5.5 x 8.5 inches in size, and has been signed in black ink, "Thank you! K." Letter has a central horizontal mailing fold. Accompanied by envelope bearing only the typed name "Alice" and a date of September 19, 1990 penned in red ink by Hicks.
Also accompanied by a copy of the original correspondence in which Hicks references the "ring," why she sent it, and her complete devastation upon its return.
